This was causing friction amongst the team and complaints about workload and unsafe assignments. As a result, practices were inconsistent across shifts and charge nurses. The process for making the daily assignment was largely based on habit, geography, intuition, and consideration of the time required to accomplish diverse interventions. The unit was struggling with teamwork, communication, and with making the assignments for registered nurses and health care aides (HCAs).

This model is a professional practice framework that involves assessing patient acuity and making assignments based on a “fit” between patient needs and staff competency. In 2012, The Hematology/Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant (HSCT) Program at the Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre identified a unique opportunity to enhance patient care and the work environment by piloting the Synergy Model ( Curley, 2007).
